Old enough to be out on his own but still an infant...
Rabbits mature very quickly. They are also super cute at this stage.
I doubt this baby is an offspring of the adult I posted a few days back: https://pbase.com/britestar/image/173813118
That older rabbit seems to frequent only our backyard & this newborn has only been spotted in the front yard. We live on 3 acres; so, the front and back yards have some distance between them. The older rabbit had also never appeared to be pregnant, but what do I really know about rabbits??? However, last year, we had baby rabbits in the back yard, as well as the front. I haven't seen any baby bunnies in the back yard this year. Just a couple of adult cottontails. Those seem to compete with the groundhogs for grazing rights and seeking refuge under our back deck.
Since both rabbits and groundhogs carry ticks and fleas, I would prefer they would stay away from the deck. Unfortunately (because we can't keep the wild critters away from our living areas) & even as much as we try to protect our dogs, Bailey has gotten 3 ticks on her this season from the wildlife that frequent the area. I find this unsettling. I take the danger of potential tick-borne diseases very seriously. As cute as the wildlife here are, I would greatly prefer they didn't come so close to the deck. However, I can't stop it.
Well, at least, the hawk threat isn't quite as bad this Summer so far as in the past couple of years.
Crows have helped a little with that.
