Survivor 12-29-22

Hot Pink Christmas Cactus

In anticipation of an extended arctic blast, we brought most all of the house plants from the Solar Room (where they normally Winter) into the main living areas of our home. Only a few geraniums and those plants too large to move were left in the Solar Room to fend for themselves. Indoor temperature (with 3 heaters running full force) got down to freezing for 7 straight nights... We did cover (with blankets) those few plants too large to move (and the geraniums). Miraculously, no plants died during the extreme cold. Very miraculously because outdoors, this cold would have been a killing freeze...

For some reason, the above Christmas Cactus was missed while we were moving plants out of the Solar Room. It also didn't get covered during the coldest nights in the Solar Room. Tucked in a corner, it was totally on its own. I suddenly discovered it today in full bloom.

"Schlumbergera will form flower buds if temperatures remain between 50 and 59 F. Any lower temperatures may kill the plant."

The temperatures definitely got into the low 30's for most areas of our Solar Room. We have multiple thermometers in the room. Watching the temperature drop so low was depressing. I feared how the remaining plants would fair. All the plants (that had to be left there) were moved against the interior wall; plus as close to the heaters as possible. So, I assume they were a little warmer. Maybe not as warm as desirable, but those plants left in the cold did survive.

This plant dates back to 2016 and obviously is a survivor. All of my other Christmas Cactuses spent the "deep freeze" days in our kitchen or living room. They were safe. When the sun finally came out again & temperatures moderated, it was a pleasant surprise to find this unfortunately overlooked Christmas Cactus still alive . Despite all, it seems to be doing well.
