Strange June Sky 6-11

As I post this, I'm waiting for the second time in just 5 days to see where the tornados (that are currently touching down in our area) are headed exactly. Knock on wood, it looks like the worst of the severe weather will again escape us directly. I love the warm months of Spring and Summer, but I HATE "Tornado Season."

Just before sunset, the sky here turned colorfully orange/yellow to our South. That got my attention.

"Oftentimes, the sky will appear yellow when a thunderstorm occurs. According to the National Severe Storms Laboratory, thunderstorms most often occur in the late afternoon or early evening, around the same time when the sun is beginning to set. Though the sun is blocked by clouds, the process of a sunset still happens, and it still emits colors. Therefore, a yellow-ish-orange hue may become visible through the clouds."

Okay. But there had been no thunderstorms... Plus, the ones headed our way were still over a couple of hundreds of miles away in the opposite direction.

Besides the yellowish sky, there was also the end of a vivid rainbow in between the heavier clouds to our South. However, there had been no rain in our area nor South of us where that rainbow had formed. All the thunderstorms were still several hours North of us. So, this was indeed an odd sky. Meanwhile, the sky to the North was not yellow nor did not look unusual. There were only some dark clouds hinting of approaching rain.

As things now look, we'll probably escape the really bad weather that is currently occurring. I don't think we'll even get rain this time around. Meanwhile, areas close by - that are normally part of my "everyday life"(but to our North) - are experiencing confirmed tornadoes on the ground. A few days ago, the same scenario happened in close-by areas to our Southeast. Those communities are still clearly up the damage.

Tomorrow a heat wave will start. "Highs tomorrow will be in the 95-degree range, but with afternoon heat indices over 100 as dew points climb above 70. The NWS has issued a Heat Advisory for much of the region starting tomorrow. Monday through Wednesday will feature the hottest weather in a few years! Actual highs will range 100, with heat indices well over that. Later in the week, a weak cold front will move in on Friday. This could bring a few strong thunderstorms, but it may also be a long duration heat event." Ugh. More storms. And hot weather.

Looks like today may have been the last day for enjoying outdoors weather for a while... The daylight hours today were overcast but problem free.
