Masks may be gone, and vaccinations at a standstill.
But the pandemic is still taking a toll and destroying human lives.

Although much "lower" than a few weeks ago, approximately 1,000 Americans continue to die from the disease each day.

However, restriction wary American society feels that is an acceptable level if other things can go back to "how it used to be". Unfortunately, LONG COVID may prevent even those not in a high-risk group from returning to true normality. COVID does not only harm those who are elderly or immune compromised. It can leave a lasting effect on anyone who had had the virus invade their body.

The only way for people, of any age group or health status, to be really "safe" is to not catch the virus.

That will now require a lot of personal and sensible responsibility. People may wish to turn the clock back to early 2019 or perhaps feel that this disease couldn't possibly harm them because they are "too young" or "too healthy". However, COVID remains a strange & unforgiving virus. Younger, "healthy" people, who may only had a mild case (or were even totally asymptomatic), are also experiencing unexpected and disabling adverse COVID effects. These COVID related, health problems may appear months after the virus is out of the body. Then, these unexpected problems may remain indefinitely.

Ireland is also embracing a return to 'normality'. While case numbers are still high, the link between infection and serious illness seems to have been broken - at least among the vaccinated. Thankfully we've had a high rate of vaccine take-up but there is still the issue of waning immunity. Read a good thread on twitter today saying that there is no guarantee that future variants will be 'milder' and could indeed be more severe.
