Tracking the Groundhog 2021

Yesterday, there were no animal tracks on the front porch.

This morning, my husband spotted "groundhog sized" foot prints leading to and from the hole that Mable and her pups used all Summer long. By the time, I got around to photographing these footprints, the snow had melted a lot and the tracks weren't so clear. However, it really does appear that the groundhog (that now has a burrow under our porch) briefly woke up from hibernation & took a quick look at the snowy scene outside. He obviously didn't stay outside very long. How interesting. I did do a bit of research and this is not uncommon.

As for the tracks closer to the door, I'm not sure of what those are. Some small mammal. Or maybe even windblown, somewhat covered up, groundhog footprints. The snow had drifted in that area. However, maybe someone more familiar with animal tracks can better identify the small tracks. The larger ones almost certainly belonged to a groundhog. Many, many, many times in warmer weather, I'd seen the groundhog pop in & out exactly where the tracks now are. Wish I'd see him this time.

No point in them denying they were there as the evidence is clear :) A good find.

Nice detective work and an interesting insight into the lives of 'your' groundhogs/
