Feeling like a lightweight piece of "junk", the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is supposed to be a reasonably good lens for portrait and low light work. It has a lot of plastic and no IS, but to my surprise, it actually is a usable lens. It seems to do a reasonable job on my Pro Body Canon 1DX.... Although the new lens will not be a replacement for my better quality lenses, I can see using it.
When I first opened the gift box on Christmas Day, I thought that it was going to be another "tele extender". But no, it's a very small, super light weight lens with the smallest lens cap that I've ever seen.
Back in my film days, a 50mm lens was my "go to" lens. However, that lens sure looked a lot different than my newest (very tiny) Canon one. The one thing I do like about the new lens is that it will focus as close as 13.8 inches; which makes it usable for doing portrait work with my tiny dogs.
