Allergic

This Summer's weather has been terrible all around.
Insects are breeding like crazy. Mosquitos make it almost impossible to go outside without first praying with Deet. The wildlife are also carrying more fleas and ticks than normal.

Back in June, I found a single flea on Bailey that we assume came off of the squirrel that frequents our deck. The poor squirrel has been constantly and frantically scratching since May. Because I'm a vigilant pet owner, the one flea on my dog remained just one flea. We never developed a flea problem.

However, the single flea set the start of Bailey's itching for weeks. Not able to find any more fleas on anyone, we had a mystery on our hands. Then, she started to lose all of her pretty coat. When I got home, after being away for a month, Bailey's coat was so thin that I could see her baby pink skin. Plus she was still scratching. Still not a flea in sight. My husband had been bathing all of our dogs weekly while I was gone & flea combing them daily. So he couldn't have missed something. Whatever was causing Bailey to itch and lose her coat required a trip to the vet.

The vet finally diagnosed Allergic Dermatitis. Cause? Probably the record crop of profuse weeds growing this season. Dogs with NO history of allergies are now suddenly developing allergies. Ditto with people. You don't have to even be near the weeds. Their pollen is being carried by the wind. One shot from the vet has given Bailey relief and stopped her scratching. She is also on oral meds for allergy and has a special shampoo. Hopefully, her pretty coat will now grow back.
