"Honey, did you see this?" 2019

said my husband when we got home late last night.

I looked. What the ______?
No, I'd never seen anything like this growing indoors in a potted houseplant before.

They weren't there the day before when I had watered. They looked kind of like mushrooms. But really? Mushrooms suddenly growing in a houseplant??? No, it couldn't be. I was too tired to deal with the situation. We went to bed. This morning, the surprise new sprouts had grown. They definitely looked like mushrooms. But I was too busy to deal with whatever was going on. So I just snapped a photo to later look up on the Web. Here is what I just now found: https://botit.botany.wisc.edu/toms_fungi/feb2002.html

Okay. So what is mildly toxic? According to various other websites, "toxic enough to cause death if eaten". Looks like I now have pretty, poisonous mushrooms growing in the pot with my Orchid Cactus. Hopefully, it's not too late for me to try to deal with the situation.

Part of me (the curious part) kind of says to let them grow to see what they'll look like. A much bigger part of me (the sensible part) just wants them gone because they ARE poisonous; plus they will also migrate to other house plants. Unfortunately, farther reading seems to indicate that short of throwing the Orchid Cactus (repotted a couple of months ago) out, controlling these mushrooms may be difficult; if not impossible. I absolutely don't want poison mushrooms (Leucocoprinus Birnbaumii) growing in my house!!! So I don't know what will happen.

I'm going to try to remove the mushrooms tomorrow. Since I've never picked mushrooms, I'm not sure how to do that. But the task will be attempted outside away from anything the dogs can get into. This plant is currently nowhere near where my dogs can reach. Still, poison mushrooms are poison. I don't want them growing anywhere inside my house!!! 2019 has been such a weird year.

UPDATE 7-09-19: I took the Orchid Cactus outside and plucked the 3 mushrooms out. Although they had no roots, I also scooped out about 2 inches deep of potting soil from the area where they were growing. That dirt was also disposed of. Hope this keeps mushrooms from regrowing. Because the soil had dried out from the extreme heat we've been having, there was no additional growth of the mushrooms in size or shape from the photo above until today. I now wonder what will happen after I thoroughly water this house plant again.

They're actually cute little mushrooms. They look like little hats. I understand they had to be destroyed. This weather just keeps on giving. Great capture of them. V.

Perhaps came in the potting soil Liz? You definitely don't want them where your
little darlings can get them considering they love eating hibiscus etc. Still
a great shot. v
