Very Slow 2019

To Develop Spring Leaves

Our Silver Maples are more than a month late in producing their Spring foliage. From my photos from various previous years, I've noticed that these same trees usually begin to first leaf out in March. By mid April, they are should be completely covered with their leaves for the Spring & Summer Seasons. We're now in Mid May & the very first leaves are just now beginning to develop. The past two Springs have been very odd weather wise. So has 2019.

This year, the Maple trees were green in March and early April with an over abundance of seedpods totally covering the trees. But no leaves. That greenness turned to gold as the seedpods ripened in early May. The colors looked more like the trees were wearing their Fall foliage than Spring. Now that a large portion of the seedpods have dropped from the trees, a very few of the first leaves on the tree are just starting to emerge as can be seen in the above photo.

It will be interesting to see what happens next. Take a look at my Maple Tree gallery from 2017: https://pbase.com/britestar/maple_2017 Things are progressing very differently in 2019. There are far fewer baby leaves on the trees today in Mid May than there were two years ago in March.
