Waning Gibbous Super Moon 2018

52%

The Clouds caught my attention a couple of hours earlier. It almost looked like the moon was being held captive by an ice prism. I kept thinking about that & wondered if it could be photographed. Finally, I could no longer resist. After I was dressed for bed, I made a decision to step outside without a coat and do a quick shot with the Bridge Camera.

Very quick because it was only 3 degrees Fahrenheit outside. Brrrrr.

Unfortunately, the clouds weren't quite as interesting as they had been earlier in the evening. The "ice prism" mirage was gone. The moon face was also more clearly visible. Usually, a shot like this (wider angle) is difficult to expose for moon detail. Especially with a crop sensor camera having less dynamic range. Guess the light from the moon (combined with only a partial moon) was what allowed me to successfully capture both clouds and moon with some detail. Fairly high in the sky, the moon did photograph as golden as seen. The atmosphere probably contributed some to that coloring. The image was shot JPG.

Although lessening, these clouds will keep the temperature "up" tonight. It's still bitterly cold outside, but the outside tempt won't dip as low as it could with a clear night and snow on the ground. Meanwhile, the heaters in the Solar Room are straining. It's down to close to freezing inside. My poor plants.

One more moon and the very worst of the cold should be over for this Winter. Hopefully.
