As I started to lean on our deck railing, this brought me to a stop — ants everywhere.
The workers were in full panic mode, carrying off their brood — the pale pupae that look like tiny grains of rice. When an ant nest is suddenly exposed to light or vibration, the colony immediately grabs the developing young and rushes to relocate them. The above photo caught that frantic rescue in progress.
