"Going to the Sun Road" : Fire - Restricted Area

Glacier National Park, Montana

In July of 2003 - due to raging,wild fire crossing the road - the National Park Service and Fire Fighters closed the famed "Going to the Sun Road". Apgar, Lake McDonald,and Many Glacier Park Lodges were also temporarily evacuated. A first in modern memory.

Later in August, the Going to the Sun was reopened - with extreme caution - for "through traffic only". However - due to continuing wild fires - a No Stopping Restriction was in effect for 14 miles on both side of the Loop: from the head of Lake McDonald to (Camp Kelly Road) to Bird Woman Falls Overlook 3.5 miles East of the Loop.

This gallery includes images taken during a 3 week period - between August 20th and September 7th - from inside the "Restricted, No Stopping" section of the Going to the Sun Road.

Your pictures are a wonderful record of the powerful forces of nature. Great work with a camera plus a great eye for what to photograph. It must have been a little frightening to be in the midst of the many fires.
