Burghers of Calais

This reproduction of the famous statues by Rodin is located on the Stanford University campus in California. In 1347, after a long siege, the city of Calais surrendered to Edward III, the King of England. Six burghers were willing to sacrifice their lives and agreed to hand over the keys of the city. In 1885 the city of Calais council commissioned Rodin who execute a monument in which he presenting the group "in a slow procession towards death". This image which was made in the rain, shows just two of the extraordinarily expressive figures.
