Heather & Chris

Heather is an art therapist and a talented young artist whose passion for painting men matches my own for photographing women. Where I love curves and swirls and softness all around me--in art, photography, clothing--everywhere--Heather loves angles and lines light and shadow.

I discovered her work on another site I post on, DeviantArt, and fell in love with a painting she'd done of a Victorian gentleman...while her work is varied and spans a variety of mediums and subjects, it was clear to me that she had a special feeling for the Victorian era--specifically, MEN from the Victorian era.

A little more research turned up the fact that she lives in my area--and an idea was born: wouldn't it be terrific to do a shoot of her, as a Victorian artist, painting one of her Victorian gentlemen?

When approached--she was enthusiastic--and I got far more than I bargained for! Not only was she willing to go along with the idea...but she actually collaborated with me on the concept--searching the web for sites showing how to do Victorian hairstyles...sending me links to paintings of artists' self-portraits--showing them in their studios. She found a marvelous book of 500 artist self-portraits, and brought it over to share with me...she helped me paint a muslin, for a backdrop, and painted a marvelous bit of glowing tile floor, to peek out of a corner of our final set. She even revealed that the painting I'd fallen in love with was of her boyfriend, Chris...and agreed to try to talk him into posing in our shoot--and even provided a marvelous costume for him (a blessing--since my costumes are almost entirely for women!).

In all, we've spent four months planning this shoot--and I enjoyed every minute of it! While all of my shoots are inspired the by subjects--usually it's all about my vision of them--and they just go along with it. When I'm lucky, I'll have someone who not only goes along with my vision, but is a natural in front of the camera, and flows easily from one pose to the next, giving me more than I'd hoped for to work with. Usually, however, I'm not working with people with a detailed knowledge of the era or the artwork that is inspiring the shoot.

In this case, however, it was a true collaboration--with someone who was coming from an artistic background, rather than a photographic background (very much like myself!), who was very familiar with the period and feel I was going for in the shoot--and who took a very active part in every piece of putting this together. It was a very joyous and exciting process for both of us--and the end results have exceeded my wildest expectations! :-)
