A very windy morning on the Mesquite Dunes. The wind must have been blowing in excess of 40-50 mph;
I could barely stand, let alone take a photo! This was one of the photos I was looking for, that is,
an image with the windblown sand blowing off of the top of a dune crest, it took a while to find the
right composition, but ended up finding this on the west side of the dune field. As a side note, I'll
tell you later how much 'fun' it was to change lenses on this dune at this moment...I had my wide
angle on when I arrived at this point and had to switch to my telephoto.

Notice the exposure and ISO I had to use for this shot: 1/500s (to keep some definition of the
sand grains), f/18 (to hold focus throughout the depth of field here), ISO 1000 (!) to achieve both
f/18 and 1/500s. I tried many combinations of ISO/shutter speed/focal length...this was the optimal
combination.

Sounds like a lot of effort, but looks like you managed to catch the whole spectrum, from the dramatic shadows to the sparkly bits in the sand at the foreground. Beautiful work, voted.

By the way, I live in Dubai, and I can understand your frustration about changing lenses when there is sand whipping about everywhere! :-)

Terrific! What a great shot though, the combination of light and shade, straight lines, curved lines and the sand blowing in the wind have all come together to give you such a stunning shot! Would i have attempted to change lenses in these conditions, probably yes. as i too would have not wanted to miss out on taking a great shot like this. Well Done!

Stunning natural pattern of the sand dunes Brian.
This composition is exceptional considering the conditions you describe.
Well done. +V

Love this shot. The sweeping lines, the shadows and the fury of the blowing sand all come together so nicely. I can't believe you attempted a lens change here!!
