In Wall Street. Bryce Canyon

Everyone who visits Bryce Canyon and hikes the Navajo loop has an image similar to this in their portfolio. It is an amazing area where the towering pines climb through the deep, ruggedly eroded narrow canyons off of Sunset Point. I’m always looking for a fresh perspective, and found this composition by climbing out of a side canyon a hundred feet or so. I was looking for an image where the trees were climbing out of the canyon, with as much of the trunk silhouetted against the blue sky as possible…so attaining a higher perspective was in order. This spot suited my visualization of the shot, and gave some additional interest with the variance in the colors of the background rock walls. This shot was taken in the evening, near sunset. It would have been virtually impossible to adequately shoot this image during the day, as the dynamic range of the scene would have been extremely challenging to work with. I’ve found that the Wall Street area of Bryce Canyon is best photographed in the evening, after the harshest light is past, but the indirect light is still strong enough to bring out the fantastic colors and gradations in the rock walls.
