St.-Cloud, St.-Germain-en-Laye, and Versailles, 2004
Trips to the parks at St.-Cloud, St.-Germain-en-Laye, and Versailles, to the west of Paris, in September and October 2004. St.-Cloud, where Henri III was assassinated, is also where the coup d'état of 1799 was planned (the château was destroyed in the 1870 war). St.-Germain-en-Laye, whose château acquired much of its present form under François Ier, is where the exiled English king James II spent his last years. Versailles is, of course, where Louis XIV built his magnificent palace.
