The old craft of paving streets with cobblestones is still practiced in France, notably in those places that get a lot of tourist traffic. The Rue Montorgueil in the second arondissement is one such place. This October 5 the craftsmen were hard at work paving: on top of a layer of level dirt they carefully set out a pattern of wavy lines and then fill in the gaps. If you look closely you can see the white string grid that they use to transfer the plan to the pavement.
