Andy gave the game away!

I have often used this statement but never knew it came from him.
I went just the other day to see Damien Hirst's exhib at Sothebys prior to it's auction ,and the prices were unbelievable £30K for a butterfly collage which in my view an art student could have done better. And although the 200 or so items left me with a sort of vibrancy they seemed devoid of aethetic appeal. And AW sums it up for me
.I wonder how long DH will last .On tuesday they are sold, how many will reach their reserve remains to be seen.

Well the auction came and went and raised £110m, an unbelievable figure to me.It says a lot to me of how much money there is in the world.
The items are unique, useless(you can't actually do anything with a pickled shark)and will not deteriorate for years. They are a store of value. But for how long,if (when) fashion changes and no one wants to buy this artwork, they will no doubt be sold to a grateful public collection and the masses will go and gawp at them.
