We got up early and headed out to "Cowboy Morning Breakfast" - about 30 miles outside of Amarillo. They loaded us up in horse drawn wagons and carted us out 2 1/2 miles through an actual working ranch. Once we arrived at the breakfast, the cowboys had it all prepared - scrambled eggs, biscuits, gravy, sausage, orange juice and HOT coffee. The scenery overlooked Palo Duro Canyon and was just gorgeous. There was play calf roping, horseback riding and cow chip tossing.
After we left there, we drove out onto Interstate 40 and found Cadillac Ranch. Bankrolled by eccentric millionaire Stanley Marsh 3 (he thinks putting “III” is too presumptuous so he uses the number 3), this ranch is in a field next to I-40 just west of Amarillo and is where ten vintage Cadillacs are buried nose down in the ground with their tail fins thrust toward the sky. The display is the Texas Panhandle’s answer to the Statue of Liberty. It’s what you look for when you’re driving by. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own spray paint and leave a message. Occasionally, the Caddys are repainted in a solid color and the graffiti process starts over. Only in Texas ......
That evening, we went back to Palo Duro Canyon, arrived early and drove through the park again, had a BBQ dinner and saw the play "Texas" which was excellent. If you're ever there, don't miss it.
