This was my seventh visit (since 1982) to this Arctic part of Scandinavia. The goal of the trip was to photograph puffins in snow on the small uninhabited island Hornøya in extreme northeastern corner of Norway. This small island is the breeding place for thousands of birds arriving in second part of March. Due to snowstorm and cancelled flights in Oslo, we (Johannes Rydström and I) were forced to take the train back to Sweden and then drive our own car all the way to the Varanger pensinsula. Non-stop driving both ways - a neat little trip of 4660 km!
This years early spring meant that the snow had almost disappeared at Hornøya, but some snowfields still remained where the birds could be photographed. A nice bonus was a Gyr Falcon that daily spun around the lighthouse where we lived.
