Syria 2010

Syria consists mostly of arid plateau, although the northwest part of the country bordering the Mediterranean is fairly green. The Northeast of the country "Al Jazira" and the South "Hawran" are important agricultural areas. The Euphrates, Syria's most important river, crosses the country in the east. It is considered to be one of the fifteen states that comprise the so-called "Cradle of Civilization".
Syria is a middle-income country, with an economy based on agriculture, oil, industry, and tourism. However, Syria's economy faces serious problems and challenges and impediments to growth, including: a large and poorly performing public sector; declining rates of oil production; widening non-oil deficit; wide scale corruption; weak financial and capital markets; and high rates of unemployment tied to a high population growth rate.

For a short visit to Syria the main attractions are:
Old city of Damascus with Ummayad Mosque which is one of the largest and oldest mosques in the world. Located in one of the holiest sites in the old city of Damascus, it is of great architectural importance. There is also the tomb of Saladin, which stands in a small garden adjoining the north wall of the mosque. In 2001 Pope John Paul II visited the mosque, primarily to visit the relics of John the Baptist. It was the first time a pope paid a visit to a mosque.

Palmyra (Tadmor) - an ancient important Aramaic city in central Syria, 215 km northeast of Damascus and 180 km southwest of the Euphrates at Deir ez-Zor. It has long been a vital caravan city for travellers crossing the Syrian desert and was known as the Bride of the Desert.

Crac des Chevaliers - a Crusader fortress and one of the most important preserved medieval military castles in the world. It is located approximately 40 km west of the city of Homs, close to the border of Lebanon.

I discovered a country full of very friendly people and some very interesting places to visit.
