These lillys also grow in Southern Maryland. The old timers there inelegantly call them "naked ladies". They're also commonly refered to as "suprise lillys". When they first come up in the spring, there's alot of greenery like the dafodils, but then it all dies out without blossoming. Then in the middle of the summer, a single bare shoot rapidly grows skyward in a couple days. Then it opens up with a single blossom in the center, with seven other blossoms fanning out in a circle around it.

these particular flowers are called "little girls go to school"... that is because they only come out in the fall for a short time
