Roseate Spoonbills

Bonnie Carrie Spillway

Gayle and I were roaming through the Spillway late this afternoon and came across these ponds that were filled with birds including this pair of spoonbills. I think these are the first one I have ever seen in it. All the dead plant material is the results of Katrina's tidal surge of salt water. The good side is that now we can see all the birds. Look for the ibis on the right side of the picture.

What a great catch, especially in this wonderful light. This would be exciting; I've never seen them anywhere.

Nice shot Breland, I've seen 1 or 2 spoonbills since katrina in the spillway also. Just didn't get to capture them. I noticed they are not as brightly colored as at Lake Martin.

Another gorgeous shot. Always a nice time of the day when the sun is low in the sky.

The light is beautiful, Breland, and the plant material adds interest. I can tell you and Gayle had a wonderful day.

I was wondering if all this debris was from the hurricanes. Great shot of these birds. Wish we had them out in the west coast.

A rare find. Any one of those would be a "hit" in San Diego. ;-)

Beautiful golden light from our gorgeous sunset. I saw lots of ibises yesterday in the barrow ponds near the River.

It sounds like you two had a really nice day together. You really found some nice light for the spoonbill photo.

Hello Breland,

Nice find!!! The plants might be dead but they add good color in the late afternoon light. I saw a Spoonbill earlier this summer hanging around with some Egrets. Nice to see such a great bird hanging around in St. Charles Parish. Hopefully if they get enough of them, they might start breeding in the area.

ir..should have been it.

Wow, did the surge come up that high on the moss Bre?? YIKES!
It really makes the area so eerie--bet it could be VERY scary at night!
Good shot-like how ir's broken into 3 areas.
