With a population of nearly 1.5 million, Munich (München), the Bavarian capital, is Germany’s third largest city (after Berlin and Hamburg). It is a cultural and intellectual metropolis and world-renowned brewing centre. Munich hosted the 1972 Olympics. Siemens, BMW and MBB Aerospace are all based in Munich. It is one of the five church provinces in former West Germany.
The Wittelsbach family ruled Bavaria from 1180 to 1918, first as dukes and later monarchs. Munich was chosen as the capital of Bavarian by Duke Wilhelm IV (1493~1550). It is transformed it into a city of European standing under the endeavour of King Ludwig I (1825~1848). His large-scale replanning of Munich created the city’s present layout and classical style.
It boasts Germany’s largest university and one of the famous orchestras in Germany: Munich Philharmonic Orchestra.
