Maximilianstraße is the most prestigious street in Augsburg's Old Town and, with its Gothic, Renaissance, Rococo, and Neoclassical buildings,
ranks among the most significant streets in Germany from an art-historical perspective.
Its most striking feature is the street's immense width—it is not a medieval alley, but rather what is known as a "square-street."
As a result, the houses appeared like stage sets lining a vast, elongated square.
Since it follows the route of the ancient *Via Claudia Augusta*—a major connecting road from Roman times—
it was designed from the outset to serve as a thoroughfare for processions and markets.
