The "Splinter Galaxy" or "Knife Edge" Galaxy - NGC 5907 in Draco

Km. 101, East Negev Desert

Canon XSi, modded, Total 32 min. = RGB 16x2 min., ISO 1600
LXD75-SN10 OTA, Baader MPCC, EQ6 mount, guided w/PHD and EQMOD

NGC 5907 is a spiral galaxy located approximately 39 million light years from Earth (and is 10.38 in visual brightness). Besides M102 candidate NGC 5866, this is the second prominent member of the NGC 5866 group. As it is seen almost exactly edge-on, and is an extremely flat disc, it appears extremely elongated, shaped like a "knife edge" or a splinter, therefore its popular name.

The galaxy has an anomalously low metallicity and few detectable giant stars, being apparently composed almost entirely of dwarf stars. The galaxy was discovered in 1788 by William Herschel. It is a member of the NGC 5866 Group. Supernova 1940A occurred in this galaxy

Harel hi,
Splendid object!!! Because it is such a thin galaxy I think it's even more special.
I like it very much.
