5: Fatehpur Sikri

The capital of the Mughal empire between 1571 and 1585, this red sandstone ghost city was built by Akbar the Great. Its location, far from the nearest water supply, saw the city plagued by water supply problems. It was abandoned not long after Akbar's death. Fatehpur Sikri is 40km by road from Agra, so it's a worthwhile day trip. The Jama Masjid mosque, with it's 54m high entrance (Buland Darwaza) feature some of the finest carved marble lattice screens you will find anywhere.
