Super Typhoon Yolanda came directly over those mountains. They are called the "Sleeping Giant" locally and the "Giant" helped divert a lot of the storm's energy up and over the town below. BTW, that mountain is made up of 100% volcanic rock and I don't believe there is a flat area anywhere on those mountains.
