The most unique country we have ever visited, ever.
It is the only country in the world that is "carbon neutral" due to the fact that about 74% of the country is forested and only using hydroelectric energy for electricity. It also has fewer than 800,000 people living in the country! It has never been successfully invaded and it is situated between China in the north and India to the south. There were no paved roads until 1960 and it sealed it's border with China in 1959 when china invaded Tibet.(It still is sealed) There is a village of Tibetan refugees living now for 59 years in Bhutan, waiting to go back to their country. We visited the village and had a Tibetan meal in the home of a man, and his family, who came to Bhutan in 1959 and told his story to us.
Ten years ago the king of Bhutan told his people he was going to convert the country to a democracy and they had only their third election while we were visiting. The king's primary activity is said to visit all parts of the country and meet with his countrymen to listen to their concern. We were told he once visited a remote village that was a 5 day walk as there were no roads to it.
Another interesting fact...there are no traffic lights in Bhutan!
