DIY your own high-grade power cord for Hifi use

You can make your own power cord. Just buy the wire and components and wire it up. Steps to do this are shown here. Disclaimer : if you wired up wrongly, you could smoke your equipment. Beware.

Components (all from LHS Electronics at Sim Lim Tower);
1. Belden 19364 power cord.
2. IEC connector (Choose a good brand, Hubbel, Wattage for example) The one I use is Marinco who OEM for other big brands.
3. MK hospital grade power plug.
4. 10 cm of heat shrink for the drain wire.

Remove the socket sleeve of the IEC connector plug, thread thru' the power cord first.

Use a pen knife to cut off the rubber sheath. Around 4cm.

Cut off the fiber filler.

There are 3 wires plus a tiny bare drain wire.

Use a wire stripper to strip off around 1 cm of copper for the 3 copper cables.

Cut off a small piece of heat shrink and insert over the bare drain wire

Insert the Earth wire and the drain wire into the Earth socket. Neutral cable to neutral socket and Live cable to live socket

Pay attention to this. If you wire this up wrongly, your appliance will fry.

Tighten all terminals screws so that the cables don't come loose from the IEC plug.

Slide the sleeve back on.

Tighten the screws for the sleeve.

Tighten the screws to hold the power cable in place. Do not over tighten.

Remove the cover of the MK power plug.

For the end of the power cable, cut, strip and cover the bare drain wire with heat shrink

Wire up the cables correctly, making sure that there is no stray copper bare wire touching other points. Pay attention to this.
