We visited Bangkok during Christmas 2005 break. The city seems more crowded than my last visit 6 years ago. The traffic is still bad, but transport around the city has been improved with the sky train and subway. During peak hours, it usually take 30 mins to get from my hotel to Siam Center. With the train, it's just 5 mins.
Bangkok offers great shopping and is one of the top destination in Asia for shopping. The best shopping is at the Chatuchak Weekend market where you can get almost anything including pets. This mother of all flea-markets is even bigger than the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul in terms of the sheer number of shops and makeshift stalls. It offers great value. US$6 for a pair of well-cut jeans, anyone?
