During the so called "Secret War" from 1963-1973, USA dropped more bombs on this relatively small area than both sides combined in WW2. 30% of those bombs never exploded. To this day 99% of the unexploded bombs (UXO) are still laying around, creating enormous problems for daily life in the countryside in Xieng Khoung province. Around 300 Laotians are killed by UXO's every year.
In Xieng Khouang today, bomb casings and other war debris are used both as decorations and useful objects. Many of the craters are used as fish ponds.
