TRAMS - Santa Cruz, Tenerife

Tenerife Tram (Spanish: Tranvía de Tenerife) is a tram service based on the island of Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands (Spain), and is operated by Metropolitan de Tenerife, a limited company 80% owned by the Cabildo of Tenerife. Service started on 2 June 2007 over a 12.5 km (7.77 mi) line which links the Intercambiador in Santa Cruz de Tenerife with Avenida de la Trinidad in La Laguna. A second line between La Cuesta and Tíncer opened in 2009 (connecting with Line 1 at Hospital Universitario and El Cardonal). It is the only existing tram or train in the Canary Islands. On 2 June 2007, the first of the 20 trams slipped out of Intercambiador on the way to La Trinidad in La Laguna. The corridor chosen for Line 1 is intended to provide around half of the Santa Cruz and La Laguna population of 350,000 with access to the system, with a maximum five minute walk. Some 44,000 daily journeys are expected to be made in the first year, eliminating over 9,500 car journeys. Construction began in 2004 with the aim of revenue service by early 2007. The initial fleet is 20 type Alstom Citadis 302 trams constructed at Alstom's Santa Perpetua de Mogoda, Barcelona plant, at a cost of €50m. The five-module, air-conditioned variant is 32.15m long, 2.40m wide, with space for 200 passengers, with 60 seated. To provide peak service, 17 trams are required. Subject to loadings, the trams may be extended in a similar manner to those of Dublin Red Line.
