On June 13th, 2011 in Fitchburg, Ma. shortly after 9 p.m. a fire broke out in the 5 story brick Johnsonia Building at 520 Main Street in the downtown section of the city. Upon arrival firefighters had heavy smoke and fire in the cockloft. Firefighters evacuated the residents from the building and were attempting a interior attack when conditions began to quickly deteriorate and they were forced from the building. Alarms were sounded to bring in additional assistance from surrounding communities. The top floor, cockloft and roof were heavily damaged by fire. This historic downtown building had over 40 apartment units on the upper floors with commercial space on the first floor.
