Desert Dust Storm

This storm was not as severe as most, coming into the valley from the northwest. The more powerful haboobs (desert dust storm) tend to build south and east of the valley, then travel from the southeast to the northwest, usually late in the afternoon around 5:00 - 6:00 PM. The thunder cells travel quickly and pass through the 70mi (east to west) x 35mi (north to south) metro area in 60-90 minutes. Downdrafts of 40-60mph (some microbursts will reach in excess of 100mph) drive dust high up into the air before the actual storm. As often as not, there will be little or no rainfall, with wide variations in amounts accross the valley.

The photos were taken from Dobbins Point at the top of South Mountain Park, some 3000 ft above the valley floor.
