CowTown

I really just sort of stumbled upon this place. After leaving Turf Soaring
School, I decided to continue on the road to see where it led. Just a few
miles down the road (at the end of the trail, so to speak) was Cowtown. Two
vehicles were parked outside and the door to the saloon was open, so I went
inside. There were 4 people at the bar and an older man dressed the part of
western bartender. I ordered a Pepsi, sat back, and listened to the
bartender tell his story about Cowtown.

He commented that he had been involved with Cowtown in some way since it was
built by a former Hollywood stuntman (Tom Mix or Nix???) some 25 years ago.
During its heyday, it was used as a training site for stuntmen for western
shows and movies. The builder had ties to a lot of local hotels and was able
to promote the place successfully for group tours as well as private
parties. Over the years it has also been used as a movie set for 26 films
(though I do not recall any of the names he mentioned as being "A" movies).
At one time, the shops were filled with vendors and it was a moneymaking
operation.

Some years ago, the ownership changed, the place was shut down and
caretakers were hired to look after the place. It seems that the caretakers
did little other than keep people out, as it has become rather dilapidated.
Recently, the bartender was asked to look after Cowtown, and decided to see
if he could attract any visitors. They have a business and liquor license,
and he sells beer and soda out of an ice chest to those that wander in. Only
the Saloon is open, and that is on the weekends. He has put up some signs,
and says he has some regulars every Friday and Saturday night. He has hopes
of striking a deal with the current owner to get the place back in shape and
operating as a viable tourist attraction.

For now, it is an interesting place, with that run down look, a sort of pre
ghost town quality.
