This is a great 4-hour trip when temperatures fall below 85. Located South of Metro Phoenix, AZ, the trail starts north off Maricopa Road about 8 miles west of Mobile. Located in the Sonoran Desert National Monument, the trail heads north for about 4 miles before heading west through the Butterfield Pass (of the Maricopa Mountains), just south of the North Maricopa Mountain Wilderness. Do take a detour about 2 miles from the start of the trail where there is a dead end trail heading west to a box canyon with wonderful views of a saguaro forest. The trail is generally a smooth surface, but with enough dips and hollows to keep your speed to 10-15 mph. Traversing the pass requires 4WD for a short section. After passing the Desert Station, take the southern fork, which will return you to Maricopa Rd. On the way back to Phoenix, take time to stop at the Estrella Sailport to watch the gliders.
