This is the principle gate in The Forbidden City and stands at the north side of Tiananmen Square. The portrait of Mao had hung there since 1949 with the two banners on either side. The one on the left reads "Long Live the People's Republic of China" and the one on the right reads "Long live the Great Unity of the World's Peoples".
