Trapped on Sabtang Island

We woke up early to shoot the sunrise, and then planned to leave the island before breakfast. We wanted to make sure the waves were at their calmest when we crossed back to Batan Island.

To our surprise, our %$#@#$ boatman had filled the bottom of his tiny vessel with 15 large LPG tanks. The weight made the boat list a little and lie much lower in the water. It didn't look good so we decided we'd rather wait for the next ride. Wrong decision.

Shortly after our boat left, the sea turned for the worst. It appeared King Neptune was having a fit! The waves turned violent and pummelled the shore. The surge of water across the two islands appeared several meters high, much higher than we've ever seen it. We knew we were doomed when two larger boats arrived but refused to sail!

Our only hope was to hitch a ride on the last boat leaving the island at about 230pm. That boat had come in with some tourists who innocently wandered into town earlier during the day. We finally left the island past 3pm. Not good. The waves were still high but the boatman thought it was now or never.

The ride back was the worst boat ride I've ever been on. It was like a roller coaster, something I never had the nerve to get on. One second you could see the island, and the other you are surrounded by 3 meter waves. There was the usual splash and scream, but we survived without incident. Some of us swore not to come back to Sabtang Island when the waves are this angry! Batan Island is beautiful enough for all the photography we need...hahaha..
