C77 Worms & Honesty

From My Cyberjournal 77August 2006 copyright/all rights reserved/Alfredo Roces
=======================================================
The honor system is a vanished custom in this dog-eat-dog, cat-screw-cat planet, so imagine my pleasant surprise to see this bit of anachronistic human behavior on Fraser island! Large conspicuous signs some meters inside the beach proclaimed: "For Sale Worms". But there was nobody around. A small cooler box lay beside the pathway in which live beach worms (for bait) were wrapped in newspaper packets with some moist sand. In front of the cooler was a small wooden box painted white, on which were scribbled: "$1 per packet. Money in box. Thanks."

Do such trusting entrepreneurs exist in our terrorist times? And will this boy survive to old age in our 21st century? We bought a few packets and pushed the money through a slot in the box; you just have to gulp that clean fresh air before the oxygen runs out.

Early last year in From my Cyberjournal 53, I showed you the gentle art of catching worms on the beach, so this one now is just some supplementary pictorial data. To avoid being redundant I will keep to the point and ask you to refer back to that cyberjournal 53 of January 8, 2005 for text information. This time, with my trusty camera I have documented the catching of this beach worm a bit more closely, from the enticing of the worm with a a surf clam (pipi) to sequence shots of
various stages of its capture.
