The solo-flight. Free as a bird. To capture the speed of flight I had to use from 1,000th to 10,000th of a second, forcing me to use the built-in supplementary flash. To catch unpredictable flight, the camera has to be an extension of yourself. You make the connection with your moving subject by becoming part of the movement, and perhaps part of the bird. A touch of zen. I had to cut down on flash-glare, so I experimented with a polarizing filter; and since I didn't have the attachment to screw my old filter into the digital camera, I just improvised somewhat crudely with electrical tape. It works as you can see, creating dark mysterious backgrounds while bringing out the luminous color qualities of the birds; but then I realized you could get the same effect by smaller apertures and faster speeds. If you can't fly, well at least you can manage some empathy with those who do. "Somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly...">
