I used a Sigma 1.4X teleconverter with the Canon lens and used a "Better Beamer" attachment with the flash. Usually my backyard is a difficult place to take pictures in the afternoon since it is on the East side of my house. Combine this with the large trees and there just isn't much available light. This was my first attempt using the "Better Beamer" and I think it's going to help.
