Though very similar in appearance to caterpillars (order Lepidoptera), you can tell them apart by the number of legs and eyes: sawfly never have fewer than six pairs of prolegs on the abdomen (Lepidopteran caterpillars never have more than five pairs); caterpillars have six eyes on each side of the head, while sawflies have only one.
