Moose with heavy tick infections will rub their fur down to the raw skin trying to get the ticks off.
Dermacentor albipictus, the winter tick, is a species of hard tick that is an external parasite of moose in North America.
There is evidence that the winter tick may be responsible for a steep decline in the Eastern moose population throughout the southern half of their range.
Winter tick increase seems to be tied to climate warming, causing an explosion in their population.
