My brother, Larry J. Marshall, was the Pueblo's youngest crew member and would have been the first one shot had Capt. Bucher signed the confession. Below is an excerpt from "War Stories" with Oliver North: The Pueblo tried to hold her own against overwhelming odds. Bucher decided he had no choice but to surrender the ship to an armed party of North Koreans. They were taken to a makeshift prison in Wonsan, where the North Koreans began to brutalize their American prisoners. The North Koreans wanted Bucher to confess to violating their territorial waters, which he denied over and over; until one day they brought the two youngest crewmen to him. Larry celebrated his "66th" birthday yesterday, Veterans Day. He celebrated his "20th birthday inside NK under some of the most brutal conditions possible. Today, 46 years later, Larry (Bub as we siblings call him) is possibly fighting his greatest battle to date, lung cancer. He has already proven his ability to persevere against all odds so we believe the battle is in his favor. It is, however, extremely upsetting to see the pictures of the Pueblo sitting inside NK as a tourist attraction. I pray one day the US of America, under the leadership of a president with a backbone, sends a target inside NK and blows it to bits!

The Captain was hung out to dry by the U.S. There were planes and ships well within reach to save the Pueblo crew and officers. This is typical of the U.S. to withhold defense of our brave men aboard "spy" vessels. I find it atrocious that the Pueblo was not defended and that it was brought to bear that the Captn. ordered no shots to defend the Pueblo. The Pueblo was not equipped to defend itself where a N. Korean Gunboat was involved - therefore the Captn. only recourse was to defend his crew by not starting a firefight where they would all be lost and the boat would still be in the hands of the Koreans. If the U.S. wanted to save the Pueblo it would and should have brought in the heavy fire from planes that were nearby. The letter from the U.S. admitting that the Pueblo was not in International Waters is pure hogwash. The U.S. sends out boats and crew to spy on another nation with absolutely no cover for them, or if there is cover available, they call it back and told to stay out of the affair. Totally irrational. The U.S. also was chagrined that the "spy" crew was unable to get rid of all the secret papers, and communications machines - if the U.S. said it should have been done, they were not stating that they knew the boat was already under siege and had no time to do the "required" thing where "spy" apparatus and papers were concerned. The crew did their best, and the Captn. made a wise decision to be captured rather than kill everyone aboard, which would have been the case had he not surrendered, knowing that they had non-sufficient firepower to defend themselves. The U.S. should not have written a letter apologizing and admitting something that was untrue about the location of the Pueblo. It's pure and simple - this ship and her crew were without representation as it should have been and that the U.S. should have protested against the N. Korean procedures. They hung the Captain out to dry, and took away all of his rank and pay, etc. They did not even allow an obituary in the newspapers when he died - he should have been held upward in an untenable situation. Instead they blamed him for everything - I think NOT! Shame on the United States for such a miserable non-coverage help team to save these men from being incarcerated for over a year and ruining a Captain's reputation. May God bless this crew and the deceased Captain. I am disgusted with the mismanagement of the affair by the U.S., just as it did when The Liberty was attacked by Israel.
