Taxi drivers from our hotel, the Cecil, kept wanting to take us to Sidi Gaber Station instead of taking us to the main train station, Masr Station, which was 5 minutes away. All trains for Cairo originate at Masr Station, then stop at Sidi Gaber. The Turbotrain then continues nonstop to Cairo's Ramses Station in just over 2 hours for under $5.
