Rejecting British control of the Cape, the Afrikaans-speaking Boers left the colony in 1834 to seek new farmland in the interior of southern Africa, establishing the Orange Free State around Bloemfontein and Zuid-Afrikaase Republiek (Z.A.R.) in the Transvaal.
