The early Gothic south portal was built here at Wetzlar Cathedral in the 13th century. Below the stone figure of Mary with the child is the depiction of the devil, who embraces a Jew.

Through these and similar representations, Jews have been degraded in the worst possible way by Christians for centuries.
Durch solche und ähnliche Darstellungen wurden Juden von Christen über Jahrhunderte auf schlimmste Weise herabgewürdigt.

In view of the pograms against fellow Jewish citizens in the past and in view of the murder of millions of European Jews by the National Socialists, the depiction at the Wetzlar Cathedral should serve as a warning to us today.
Angesichts der Pograme gegen jüdische Mitbürger in der Vergangenheit und angesichts des millionenfachen Mordes an den europäischen Juden durch die Nationalsozlialisten soll die Darstellung am Wetzlarer Dom uns heute Mahnung sein.
