This photo was taken in December 2010, several months before the start of the uprising. The sign shows the Arabic name, ميدان  الشهداء - Meydan Al-Shahada', which is Martyr's Square, even though during Qadhafi's time the place was referred to as Green Square. When it was built by the Italians, it was Piazza Italia and under King Idris, it became Independence Square
